Bridge day, waterfall day, or highland day?

Three shapes a Bosnian day takes. Most trips have room for two of them, and the choice decides which half of the country you see.

The bridge day

Mostar, Blagaj and Počitelj in one loop

Full day· Herzegovina· three stops

Stari Most at opening hour before the coaches arrive, the dervish house under the Buna cliff at Blagaj, then the walled Ottoman hill town at Počitelj with the whole valley below it.

The waterfall day

Kravice, and the swim nobody packs for

Full day· swim late May–Sept· towel required

A twenty-five-metre curtain of falls on the Trebižat with a shingle beach at the foot of it. The pool is open water and stays cold through August, which is exactly why people remember it.

The highland day

Lukomir, where the road finally gives out

Long day· June–October· 1,469 m

The back road over Bjelašnica climbs to stone houses with shingle roofs on the rim of the Rakitnica canyon. Snow shuts it for half the year, so nobody sells you a winter Lukomir.

Sarajevo

Sarajevo is four empires deep, and you can walk it in an afternoon.

Ottoman lanes stop dead at an Austro-Hungarian boulevard — there is a line set into the pavement where one becomes the other. Coppersmiths still hammer in Kazandžiluk, and lunch is ćevapi whether you planned it or not.

All Sarajevo tours
The famous ones

What everyone comes to Bosnia for.

The bridge, the falls at Kravice, the tekija under the cliff at Blagaj, the Sarajevo lanes, the Ottoman hill town at Počitelj and the highland houses at Lukomir. The places itineraries get built around, and the honest way to book each one.

Mostar

In Mostar, wait for the diver.

The bridge stands twenty-one metres above the Neretva and men have been going off it since the Ottomans finished it in 1566. They collect from the crowd first and jump when the hat is full, which can take an hour. Stay for it, then eat on the east bank where the coach parties do not go.

The diver, the coppersmith and the highland shepherd.

Waterfalls and old towns turn up all over the Balkans. The jump off Stari Most, the hammering in Kazandžiluk and the shingle roofs at Lukomir belong to this country on their own.

Since 1566

The Stari Most Jump

Mostar’s bridge is twenty-one metres above the Neretva, and the men of the diving club still go off it in front of a crowd most summer afternoons. They pass the hat first and jump when it is full, so the wait is part of the show. The river runs cold all year off the karst, which is why nobody copies them on impulse; the club puts beginners off the low platform downstream long before it lets them near the parapet.

Kazandžiluk

Coffee, and the Coppersmiths

Bosnian coffee comes in a copper džezva with a sugar cube and a square of rahat lokum, and it is not espresso: you let the grounds settle, pour slowly, and stay put. The džezva was very likely beaten out by hand a hundred metres away, in the coppersmith lane off Baščaršija where the hammering starts mid-morning and carries the length of the street.

The Highland Village

Lukomir is the highest permanently inhabited village in the country, a single row of stone houses with shingle roofs on the lip of the Rakitnica canyon. The road in is snowed shut for roughly half the year, so the walking season runs June to October, and the families who keep sheep up there come down before the first heavy fall.

Recent history

Understanding what happened here.

Sarajevo was encircled and shelled for nearly four years, the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare. The hand-dug tunnel under the airport runway was the city’s only land link to the outside for most of that time. Both the frontline positions and the tunnel house are open to visitors today.

These are not sightseeing stops and no itinerary should treat them as one. Allow more time than the schedule says, read the description before you book, and expect the guiding to be first-hand: many of these tours are led by people who were in the city throughout.

Arriving from Croatia

Coming into Bosnia from Dubrovnik or Split.

Most Kravice and Mostar day trips sold on the Croatian coast cross an international border, twice. Bring the passport, expect a queue in August, and count the crossing as part of the day: a Dubrovnik departure is a twelve-hour commitment for about four hours in Herzegovina. Booked from Mostar instead, the same stops are a relaxed afternoon.

Plan around these

The Bosnian days that will not wait for you.

Most of the country can be booked the night before from a guesthouse in Baščaršija. These cannot. They run on snowmelt, on a mountain road that closes, and on a religious calendar.

  1. 01Lukomir Highland Village HikeThe Bjelašnica road is under snow roughly November to May. In season the small groups run two or three days a week, not daily, and they fill.
  2. 02Blagaj, Počitelj & Kravice Waterfalls Day TourSwimming only makes sense from late May to September. Earlier in spring the Trebižat is in flood and the beach at the foot of the falls is under water.
  3. 03Mostar and Medjugorje Full-Day TourThe anniversary of the first apparition in late June and the youth festival in early August fill every seat and every bed in the parish.
  4. 04Vrbas River Rafting Adventure with BreakfastThe Neretva and the Vrbas run on snowmelt and dam releases; the big water is spring into early summer and the operators cap the boats.
