The bridge stands twenty-one metres above the Neretva and men have been going off it since the Ottomans finished it in 1566. They collect from the crowd first and jump when the hat is full, which can take an hour. Stay for it, then eat on the east bank where the coach parties do not go.

Mostar’s bridge is twenty-one metres above the Neretva, and the men of the diving club still go off it in front of a crowd most summer afternoons. They pass the hat first and jump when it is full, so the wait is part of the show. The river runs cold all year off the karst, which is why nobody copies them on impulse; the club puts beginners off the low platform downstream long before it lets them near the parapet.

Coffee, and the Coppersmiths
Bosnian coffee comes in a copper džezva with a sugar cube and a square of rahat lokum, and it is not espresso: you let the grounds settle, pour slowly, and stay put. The džezva was very likely beaten out by hand a hundred metres away, in the coppersmith lane off Baščaršija where the hammering starts mid-morning and carries the length of the street.

The Highland Village
Lukomir is the highest permanently inhabited village in the country, a single row of stone houses with shingle roofs on the lip of the Rakitnica canyon. The road in is snowed shut for roughly half the year, so the walking season runs June to October, and the families who keep sheep up there come down before the first heavy fall.

Understanding what happened here.
Sarajevo was encircled and shelled for nearly four years, the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare. The hand-dug tunnel under the airport runway was the city’s only land link to the outside for most of that time. Both the frontline positions and the tunnel house are open to visitors today.
These are not sightseeing stops and no itinerary should treat them as one. Allow more time than the schedule says, read the description before you book, and expect the guiding to be first-hand: many of these tours are led by people who were in the city throughout.
Coming into Bosnia from Dubrovnik or Split.
Most Kravice and Mostar day trips sold on the Croatian coast cross an international border, twice. Bring the passport, expect a queue in August, and count the crossing as part of the day: a Dubrovnik departure is a twelve-hour commitment for about four hours in Herzegovina. Booked from Mostar instead, the same stops are a relaxed afternoon.

Most of the country can be booked the night before from a guesthouse in Baščaršija. These cannot. They run on snowmelt, on a mountain road that closes, and on a religious calendar.
